WHAT IS ST JOHNS WORT?

St. John's Wort, a plant named in honour of John the Baptist, has been used for over 2000 years in European medicine. St. Johns Wort is believed to be a natural antidepressant and is derived from the yellow flowering hedgerow plant of the same name.
It can be bought over the counter in the UK at most herbal shops and over 2 million people in the UK are currently taking St. Johns Wort.
It is also taken all over the world in large quantities.
It is totally natural and relatively inexpensive making it appear to be an ideal self cure for mild depression.
The principal evidence that St. Johns Wort can be effective is from a paper published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in August 1996.
This research showed St John's Wort to be more effective as an anti-depressant than placebo.
The research also compared the effect of St. Johns Wort on depression compared to prescribed anti depressants. The results, although not conclusive, showed St. Johns Wort to have fewer side effects and be as good as these prescribed drugs.
A further and more recent trial involving 263 people published in the British Medical Journal in December 1999, showed that St John's Wort was again better than placebo and as good as the commonly prescribed anti-depressant Imipramine. The herbal remedy had fewer side effects and the researchers concluded it showed promise for the long term treatment of moderate depression.
